DIVISION ONE LEAGUE CUP FINAL REPORT

On the best Saturday for months the Division One final was bright but lacked hotshots in the box. Both teams gave everything but defences tended to be on top and the first half ended goalless. The second half started in much the same manner with chances few and far between. Then a set piece was not cleared by the Chipping Ongar defence and in the ensuing scramble Jimmy Bushnell latched on to the loose ball and smacked it home to put Old Chelmsfordians 1-0 up. Chipping Ongar managed to rally even though legs were feeling the pace of the game and on 90 minutes it was still 1-0 but an earlier clash of heads had held up the game and that additional time was crucial as it enabled one more ball to be stuck in the danger area. Up stepped Captain Glen Knight to rattle in the equaliser and that strike sent the game into extra time.

Goals were as scarce as in the previous 94 minutes and penalties became the decider for the trophy destination. Not the greatest way to end a hard fought encounter but with one saved and one skied it was Chipping Ongar who trudged off with Runners Up medals while Old Chelmsfordians with a number of Old Chelmsfordians watching took the Cup back to Chelmsford. As it happens well known former Chelmsford City player Peter Gillottt was the guest of honour who handed out the medals. 

Result Chipping Ongar 1 Old Chelmsfordians 1 after extra time. Old Chelmsfordians won 4-2 on penalties
