DIVISION TWO LEAGUE CUP FINAL REPORT
On one of the warmest Saturdays of the season it took a while for both sides to get into their stride and although there was lots of endeavour both sides cancelled out each other providing few goalmouth thrills for the large crowd basking in the sunshine. Cricketers Horndon Saxons started to build up some pressure and on thirty minutes they got the breakthrough when captain Kellye Stephens met a cross and planted his header out of the reach of Andy Wakefield in the Sporting Club Woodham goal. There followed a period of concerted pressure by the Saxons which on the fortieth minute resulted in them doubling their lead. Probably the best move of the match flowed down the Saxons left wing, two passes along the edge of the box the last presenting Scott Baker with an opening which he duly rifled home giving the keeper no chance. 2-0 was how it started the second half and with the slope in their favour Sporting Club Woodham were much more in the game but could not get on the end of a number of good through balls. Then with twenty minutes played a scramble in the Sporting Club Woodham goal provided Tony Woodbury with a simple tap in to make the score 3-0. Although they tried Sporting Club Woodham could not break through the Saxons defence and had to settle for second best on the day, the final score remained at 3-0. The Cup was presented by Richard Bass
